How Your Visibility Score Works
Last updated: October 1, 2026
1. What we actually do
For every question in your tracker, Applaude sends the exact same question to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity via each platform's official API. No scraping, no browser automation. We then have a model read each response and judge four things: was your brand mentioned by name, was it explicitly recommended (not just mentioned), how positive the response was toward it, and where it appeared in any ordered list. Those four judgments combine into a 0–100 score for that question, on that platform.
2. The per-question formula
A response that never mentions your brand scores 0. Nothing else counts if you're not in the conversation. Once you're mentioned, the score builds from four weighted components:
| Component | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Mentioned | 40% | Your brand is named in the response, full stop. Nothing else scores without this. |
| Recommended | 30% | The response positions your brand as something to consider or choose. A factual mention alone doesn't count. |
| Sentiment | 20% | How positive the response is toward your brand, from enthusiastic to negative. |
| Position | 10% | Bonus for appearing in the top 5 of an ordered list. 1st place scores the full 10%, tapering to 0 by 6th. |
A brand that's mentioned, explicitly recommended, described enthusiastically, and named first in a list scores 100. A bare, neutral, unranked mention scores 40: mentioned, nothing more.
3. Platform scores
Your score for a given platform (e.g. "ChatGPT: 62") is the average of that platform's per-question scores across every question in your tracker, including the zeros from questions where you weren't mentioned at all. We don't drop unfavorable questions from the average; a platform that ignores you on 8 of 10 questions will show a low score even if the 2 mentions it does make are glowing.
4. Your headline Visibility Score
Your visibility score is based on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Google AI Search results are reported separately when available.
Your headline visibility score is the equally weighted average of those four core platforms. The Executive Brief identifies the strongest and weakest of those same platforms. Google AI Search uses Gemini with Google Search grounding and does not change the headline score. The separate Google AI Overviews check tests whether a live search result mentions or cites your brand.
5. Other metrics on your report
- Recommendation Rate: the share of questions, averaged across the four core platforms, where the response explicitly recommended your brand rather than just mentioning it.
- Sentiment: averaged only over responses that mentioned you. A platform that never mentions your brand doesn't get to drag your sentiment score down with silence.
- Share of Voice: your brand's mentions as a percentage of every brand mention recorded across the run, including brands outside your visible top-10 competitor list.
- Brand Coverage: the percentage of your tracked questions where at least one platform mentioned you at all.
6. Score bands
Where you land on the 0–100 scale maps to a label you'll see throughout your report:
| Score | Label |
|---|---|
| 86 – 100 | Dominant |
| 66 – 85 | Strong |
| 41 – 65 | Moderate |
| 16 – 40 | Emerging |
| 0 – 15 | Low Visibility |
7. What this isn't
Your Visibility Score is a snapshot of how AI platforms responded to a fixed set of questions at the moment your report ran. It is not a guarantee, not a legal certification, and not immune to the platforms themselves changing their models or responses over time. Two runs minutes apart can differ slightly; that's a property of the underlying models, not a bug in our measurement. Treat the score as a directional signal for where to focus, the same way you'd treat any single analytics snapshot. See our Terms of Service for the full disclaimer.
